Edgar had a post on his blog today asking the question of what dessert would we choose to be.
Here's mine. I've always been a big cheesecake fan, but if it's sweetness and comfort I want, give me good old Bread Pudding. I love Rum Sauce, but Butter Sauce is just as good. And it has to be very warm. Highway to Heaven!
NEW ORLEANS BREAD PUDDING WITH RUM SAUCE
Copyright © 2011 Cooks.com - All rights
PUDDING:
1 loaf French bread, torn into chunks
1 qt. milk
2 c. sugar
2 tbsp. vanilla
3 eggs
1 c. peeled apples, diced
1/2 c. raisins
3 tbsp. butter, melted
Soak bread in milk for about 30 minutes. Mix sugar, vanilla, eggs and apples. Combine with bread chunks. Spread melted butter on bottom of 13 x 9 x 2 inch pan. Add bread mixture. Bake at 350 degrees about 30 to 35 minutes, until bubbly and hot.
SAUCE:
1/2 c. butter
1 c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1 egg
Rum to taste, about 3 tbsp.
Cream butter and sugar. Add vanilla. Slowly stir in 1 egg, then add the rum. Heat and stir over low heat about 5 minutes. Serve warm over individual pudding servings. Yield: 8 to 10 servings.
Be sure to use French bread. That makes it New Orleansian (new word). And a dollop of whipped cream or French vanilla ice cream on top isn't too bad, either.

Yum this is a little diferent to the traditional recipe we make...we spread normal bread with raspberry jam and line a oven proof dish...sprinkle with sultanas. We thn make a baked custard mixture with milk, sugar and eggs and pour gently over the bread then bake in oven. Very similar and a cosy dessert for a winters nights tea.
My you look yummy Marian! Thanks for the recipe.
I am telling you we should be sisters. I love, love, love bread pudding. Thank you for sharing this recipe. The others I have are quite involved and haven't turned out well. I can't wait to try this. We have a Panera bakery here I can get a nice loaf of French bread from.
Apple Crumble and custard for me.
In this week's International Express Apple Crumble was top of the list of favourite British puddings. Bread and Butter pud. came 3rd. The Express goes on to say that apple crumble ticks all the boxes in being tasty, easy to prepre and versatile.
Your recipe looks very easy and tempting too.
I would be chocolate chip cookies! Made with chopped pecans, and warm from the oven!
Although bread pudding is high on my list, too, along with lemon meringue pie, carrot cake, pecan pie, ...
Any pudding would be fine with me, i have the sweetest tooth around LOL
Oh dear! That sounds too good! I'll have to try that pudding too!
Happy Stitching!
That looks GOOD! Thanks for the recipe!
I love bread pudding, too. I have been experimenting with my bread pudding the last couple of years. Try adding large-dice apples and drizzled with a little caramel - yummy!. I have also used stale brioche, I may try it with stale king cake this year (as if king cake sticks around long enough to be stale ;)
